Wheels on Wednesday has been the passion of an enthusiastic motoring professional who has been thinking about a midweek ‘wheels’ meeting for the last three years. And Spetchley was the dream location being easily accessible for several surrounding counties. It’s a loss making venture with surprisingly high costs to deliver - insurance, venue rental, toilets, website etc and should it ever reach the situation where it creates a surplus then any funds raised will go to our favoured recipient St. Richard’s Hospice who do amazing work that can touch all of us.
The idea is for everybody to have a midweek chance to air their machines, meet like minded people and generally have a relaxed time in the Worcestershire countryside. Our hosts at Spetchley Park, which is privately owned, are embracing this new venture and hopefully we can develop other events that stretch beyond the car park.
We pay a very reasonable fee to the estate and they aim to enlarge the car park at some time and their revenue will go towards this fund which will also benefit Wheels on Wednesday.
To start with we had barista coffee, soft drinks and a food truck serving hot street food. This has now expanded to three food trucks (home made burgers, fish & chips and wood fired pizzas) 2 drinks outlets (barista coffee and a horse box bar) and ice cream. Working in conjunction with the Spetchley Estate, we hope to add extra facilities (tables, chairs, shelters) and we have started to attract local retailers. We also hope to attract some local partners/sponsors who can add to the experience. This will take some time but organic growth should follow.
There will be a welcome for everybody and a relaxed atmosphere and we are talking of creating opportunities for mid week run outs that end or start at Spetchley for B-road lovers.
Having filled the car park (our original location) at the second event with over 300 vehicles, the new site within the parkland of the estate now offers much greater capacity, fantastic rural views and the magnificent palladian manor house in the backdrop.
